About the Artist

Joni Sternbach is a New York based artist, photographer and (sometimes) filmmaker. Over the course of a career spanning many decades, her portrait-based work explores a variety of themes, while simultaneously experimenting with historic photographic processes. She is best known for her wet-plate collodion tintype portraits of surfers and surfboards, made on beaches around the globe. Sternbach is founding faculty at Penumbra Foundation in NYC where she currently teaches and serves on their advisory board.
